history of
Plzeňka
live your life – right here, right now

The location of the future Rezidence Na Plzeňce has a rich history and is part of the Smíchov protected heritage zone. The settlement of the area of today’s Smíchov is documented by archaeological findings since the Middle Ages, together with written sources dating back to the 13th century. The origin of the name Smíchov most likely dates back to the reign of Charles IV. In 1386, the local land was divided into parcels and a settlement was established, with the population coming from different places thus “mixing” here(in Czech “smíchání”). The name Smíchov was first recorded in 1402.

The area is currently changing significantly from an industrial-residential zone from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries into a zone with residential and office buildings. In the past centuries, Smíchov used to be a renowned industrial district, where prominent brands with a worldwide reputation operated, such as the Ringhoffer factory. Thanks to the large number of factory chimneys, Smíchov was once even called “the Manchester of Prague”. Plzeňka was a defunct farmhouse and mill in Smíchov between the nearby Nádražní, Ostrovského, Za Ženskými domovy and Stroupežnického streets, on the site of the Na Knížecí bus station and the Anděl metro exit. The street of the future Rezidence Na Plzeňce featured mainly manufactories and workshops. The street Na Plzeňce got its name more than 100 years ago, specifically in 1910 (source: Wikipedia, Pražský uličník).
